So, I’ve decided to start a blog, here goes nothing I guess.
Should I introduce myself seen as this is my first post? Probably should. My name’s Mik and I take photos, sometimes they’re quite good. You want more? Really? Ok.
I’m not going to sit here and proclaim that I’ve dedicated my life to photography, got my first camera at 3 years old and have been taking pictures since because that’s just not true. I was, however, always put in charge of the camera on family holidays and I enjoyed the task of snapping away merrily at whatever I liked yet that’s as far as it went and my main focus for most of my life has been playing and making music.
I’ve been a drummer for 14 years and at one point was lucky enough to tour the country, play some festivals and share the stage with a couple bands who influenced me to make music in the first place. I did alright for myself, but the older I got the less fun it was and in the end it became kind of a chore. I’ve always been the kind of person that if something is no longer fun for me then I’ll leave it behind and pick up something else, so that’s exactly what I did.
Like I mentioned earlier, I always had great fun taking pictures on family holidays with our little point and shoot so when my friend’s mum was selling her old Canon 4ooD DSLR I jumped at the chance to have an actual, proper camera and managed to pick it up on the cheap. A couple months after that my sister bought me an online course for my birthday which was great and got me to grips with the basics and after that I was lucky enough to stumble upon a local photographer (Brian Sandham aka Stillshot Photography, check him out. Great photographer and genuine top bloke too) who ran courses on how to use your camera in full manual mode from his studio. This allowed me to then go out and explore so that I could continue to learn the craft on my own.
Obviously, spending so much of my life making music, and still having a huge passion for it, there’s no way I could move too far away from that and so I decided very early on that I would try my best to make it as a music photographer, be that live gig photos or (something I hated whilst being in the band, I just look constantly awkward) promo portraits.
So yeah, that’s about it really. I hope that serves as a worthy enough introduction as to who I am and what I’m doing here. If not then leave some questions in the comments somewhere and I’ll try my best to address them at some later date in another post, sounds fair right? Good.
